RICHARDSON, TX (09.20.19) - Senior
Alfredo Kaegi scored twice as he lifted the No. 24-ranked UT Dallas men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Fontbonne University Friday night to open a four-team classic held this weekend at the UTD Soccer Field.
Kaegi collected his first tally of the night in the 20th minute to give the Comets' a 2-1 lead and capped the scoring just 33 seconds into the second half. Sophomore teammate
Jovi Munoz added UTD's first goal, coming on a penalty kick in the 12th minute.
The Comets (6-1) finished the win with 21 shots on the night, closing out the contest with 12 shots on goal. FU keeper Eric Volk kept the Griffins in the contest with nine saves in the full 90 minutes.
Munoz got the Comets on the board early on when he was taken down in the box by Volk. Munoz' team-leading sixth goal of the fall was a bullet to the right netting past a diving Volk. The Grffins (1-6-1) countered, however, just more than two minutes later when Mike Massay beat the UTD defense on a wind-aided breakaway after a pass from teammate Jared Lyeki. FU would finish the opening half with three total shots, four all game, with Massay's goal the only shot on frame by the Griffins in the entire contest.
Kaegi's first tally gave the Comets back the lead in the 20th minute as he took advantage of a misplay by the FU keeper and found the back of an empty net. Kaegi's second goal of the night, third of the season, came in the opening minute of the second half as the Comets intercepted Fontbonne's kickoff and
Merek Byckovski found a streaking Kaegi with a slip pass down the middle from near midfield.
Kaegi and
Jesse Ardila each collected five shots in the win while Munoz finished with four shots.
The Comets return to the field Sunday for a 1:30 p.m. home match against Emory in the final game of a four-game weekend at the UTD Soccer Field. Emory will square off with Mary Hardin-Baylor at 11 a.m. Saturday before UMHB and Fontbonne meet at 11 a.m. Sunday.
