Kelden Pruitt had a game-high 20 points to lead six players in double-digit scoring as the Comets earned an 86-65 road win over LeTourneau Saturday afternoon in American Southwest Conference East Division play.
The Comets (now 10-4, 4-1 ASC) poured in 12 three-pointers and nearly shot better than 50 percent from the field for the fifth straight outing, turning a 10-point halftime lead into their second-largest margin of victory this season
Sophomore
Kolton Pruitt led the three-point attack for the Comets, hitting 5-of-10 long shots to close the afternoon with a career-high 16 points off the bench.
Jalen Weber, one of the ASC's top scorers, finished with 14 points,
Hans Burwitz added 12 points and
Xavier Ferrell and
Hunter Stevens both closed the win with 10 points. Burwitz grabbed a team-best nine rebounds, finishing one board shy of his fifth consecutive 'double-double'.
The Comets led LETUÂ wire-to-wire in the match-up of two of the contenders for this year's ASC East title. UTD scored the first eight points of the contest and would secure its first double-digit lead at the 13:27 mark of the opening half, 14-3, after
Kolton Pruitt's first three-pointer. The host YellowJackets did draw back for a 17-17 tie near the midway point of the period, but the Comets would slowly pull away for a 44-34 advantage at the intermission.
UTD closed the first on a 9-0 run and then started the final period by outscoring LETU 18-5 before the first media timeout to take control of the contest. Stevens' lay up with 15:24 remaining in the contest would push the Comet lead to 62-39. The Comets extended their lead to as many as 26 points, 71-45, on another
Kolton Pruitt trey with just under 11 minutes left.
The Comets shot 47.7 percent from the field in the victory, going 12-of-24 from three-point range, and hit 12-of-18 free throws. UTD out-rebounded the YellowJackets, 45-39, and forced 12 turnovers.
UTD will return home Thursday night as the Comets host Louisiana College in another ASC East battle. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.
