Comets More Than Double Up Sul Ross State, 89-44

ALPINE, TX (01.23.20) - The UT Dallas women's basketball team posted its second-highest scoring output of the year as the Comets rolled to an 89-44 road win over Sul Ross State Thurday night in American Southwest Conference crossover play.

The Comets improved to 13-4 overall with Thursday's win and hold on to the top spot in the ASC's East Division, now at 7-1. UTD will look for its fifth consecutive victory Saturday afternoon as they continue its road trip at Howard Payne. Tip-off is at 1 p.m. in Brownwood.

Junior guard Raenett Hughes scored 19 of her game-high 23 points in the opening half as the Comets cruised to a 45-24 lead at the break. UTD took control of the contest early with a 7-0 run to start teh game and secured a 24-11 lead over the host Lobos after first period. The Comets would then limit SRSU to just 4-of-13 accuracy in the second quarter to extend their lead to more than 20 points and never gave up, even with reserves took the floor for the majority of the second half.

Hughes closed the win 11-for-16 from the field, adding five rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists. Senior Victoria Pena joined Hughes in double-digit scoring with 10 points, hitting 3-of-4 three-pointers. Nkechinyerem Okehi and Dominique Eule each added eight points while Natalie Miller added seven points and snagged a game-best seven rebounds.

For the night, the Comets shot 48.6 percent from the field, connecting on 34-of-70 shots as a team, hitting nine three-pointers. UTD was an efficient 12-for-14 from the free-throw line and out-rebounded the Lobos, 42-25.
