Underwood 'Triple-Double' Lifts Comets Past SRSU in Season Opener

RICHARDSON, TX (12.09.20) - After missing last season due to injury, UT Dallas guard Dimitrius Underwood opened his senior campaign with his third career 'triple-double' as the host Comets held off Sul Ross State, 67-63, Wednesday afternoon.

The Comets (1-0) return to action Thursday afternoon when they host Mary Hardin-Baylor in another 'non-conference' contest against an American Southwest Conference foe. Tip-off is 3 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center. Only players' parents will be allowed as spectators due to COVID-19 protocols.

A native of Mesquite, Underwood was forced to sit out the 2019-20 season after claiming first team All-America honors as a junior. Despite a rusty afternoon from the field, he would finish the season-opening victory with 13 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists and is currently tied for second all-time in the ASC, now two such performances from the league record. In addition, Underwood moved into second place on the UTD all-time scoring list, now with 1,421 career points, passing former Comet great Chris Barnes (1,411 points, 2008-12).

The Comets as a team were rusty as well to open Tuesday's game, but maintained a 34-28 advantage over the visiting Lobos at the break. UTD led by as many as 12 points late in the half, but Sul Ross State would score the final five points of the period to time the Comet lead to just six points.

UTD would regain a double-digit lead with 8:38 left to play when Dylan Miles drained a three-pointer to push the Comet cushion to 10 points, 61-51. The Lobos, however, answered with an 10-2 run over the next six minutes to claw back within two points, 63-61, after two Logan Dixon free throws at the 2:32 mark.

The Comets defense then clamped down over the final two minutes, holding the Lobos 1-7 from the field in the final two minutes to secure the victory.

Michael Forster led the Comets with 14 points while Kelden Pruitt rounded out the Comets in double figures with 12 points. The Comets shot 42.4 percent from the field and connected on 6-of-19 three-pointers in the win. UTD struggled from the line, hitting just 11-of-19 free shots.
