REDLANDS, CA (02.15.20) - The UTD Comets baseball team rode a 15-hit attack and a solid start from junior pitcher
Carter Cochrane to take the second game in their series with the University of Redlands, 6-3, Saturday afternoon. It was the third straight win for UT Dallas (3-2), which moved its record above .500 for the first time this season.
The two teams wrap up their three-game set in California at 12 noon (Central time) Sunday.
After a 12-9 slugfest that lasted over two days in the opening game of the series, the Comets slowly built an early lead in Game 2Â and held on to pick up the win.
Cochrane bounced back after a short stint in his first outing this season to go six innings, allowing just six hits and one earned run while striking out five Bulldog hitters. After surrendering a first-inning run, the junior from Houston pitched five shutout innings to pick up his first win of the season.Â
Hunter Cheek and
Charles Bass worked the final three innings allowing just one Redlands score. Bass picked up the save.
Shortstop
Nick Balley led six hitters in double figures with a 3-for-4 game to finish the first two games of the series 6-for-9.
A.J. Liu,
Kaden Ingram,
Isaiah Swann,
Connor Allred and Cheek (who started the game at designated hitter) each had a pair of hits in the 15-hit barrage.
The Comets got on the board early by loading the bases on a Boyd single, Liu walk and infield single by Cheek before
Zach Jordan delivered an RBI fielders choice.
After the Bulldogs tied the game in the bottom of the inning, UTD erupted for three more runs in the 2nd. Again, the Comets loaded the bases with a Balley single, an Ingram walk and Swann bunt single.
Jacob Perry drew an RBI walk to give UTD the lead, then Ingram came home on a Liu groundout. Swann then scored after an error on the Redlands pitcher to make it 4-1.
The Comets upped the count to 6-1Â in the 5th when Balley delivered a two-out double that scored Allred and Cheek.
UTD had base hits in every inning and threatened with runners at third base in each of the 6th, 7th and 8th innings, but failed to bring any of them home. Redlands scratched across single runs in the 6th and 8th inning, but the Comet pitching always rallied to slam the door on any big rallies.
