RICHARDSON, TX (02.22.20) – The UT Dallas baseball team rallied in both ends of a doubleheader Saturday to complete a sweep over winless Hardin-Simmons, 3-2 and 4-3, in American Southwest Conference play.
Â
UTD (6-3 overall) used an 8th-inning sacrifice fly to break a 2-2 in the opener; then got a game-winning 3-run home run from junior shortstop Nick Balley in the second game to complete the sweep and stay perfect in ASC play. Hardin-Simmons (0-9) suffered two more heart-breaking losses.
Â
Both games featured stellar pitching duals on both sides of the diamond before UTD relievers Charles Bass and Orion Drymond picked up the wins.
Â
GAME 1: UTD 3, HSU 2
Â
Comet starter Carter Cochrane was in line for the win after going 6.1 innings, scattering just four hits and recording 7 strikeouts. But Cochrane, who had a 2-1 lead and had only given up four hits and a single run through the first six innings, allowed an HSU baserunner to start the 7th. Drymond came in and a throwing error on the Comets allowed the inning to continue before the Cowboys tied the score and sent the game into extra innings on a sacrifice fly.
Â
UTD had had to scratch for its first two runs against HSU starter Hayden Clark, who was a hard-luck losing pitcher after leaving in the 5th with a 1-0 lead, two outs, but two runners on after a Chandler Boyd single and Isaiah Swann fielder's choice.  Balley had the big hit in the opener as well, driving a ball to right field to score Boyd. Luke Richter then followed with a bases loaded walk to take a 2-1 lead.
Â
In the 8th, Connor Allred was clipped by a pitch to start the inning, Boyd drew a walk and Kadan Ingram loaded the bases when an errant throw on a sacrifice bunt sailed high to first base. With one out, Jacob Perry the send a ball deep to centerfield and Allred scampered home with the winning run.
Â
GAME 2: UTD 4, HSU 3
Â
This time, the Cowboys looked like they might be working toward their first win of the season. HSU scratched across single runs in the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead before UTD got one back in their half of the 3rd by loading the bases on two walks and a single. A ground ball by A.J. Liu scored Ingram to finally get the Comets on the board against HSU hurler J.P. Poe, who limited the Comets to just single hits in the first four innings.Â
Â
But UTD's Drymond came to the rescue with three perfect innings of relief, setting the stage for Balley's late inning heroics in the bottom of the 6h. Liu and Allred started off the inning with singles before Balley lofted an 0-2 pitch over the left field wall for the go-ahead runs.
Â
Drymond, who faced a minimum nine hitters in his three inning performance, went 1-2-3 again in the top of the 7th to finish off the Cowboys.
