Big Inning Leads to Comet Loss to McMurry to Open ASC Series

RICHARDSON, TX (02.28.20) - Up 6-0 after three innings, the UT Dallas softball team would give up an 11-run fourth as the Comets dropped a 14-6 decision to McMurry Thursday afternoon to open a three-game American Southwest Conference series.

The Comets (now 3-9, 1-3 ASC) will return to the field at 11 a.m. Saturday for a doubleheader with McMurry. The War Hawks improved to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in ASC play after the victory.

UTD opened the scoring with a three-run 2nd and added three more runs to take a 6-0 lead. However, McMurry sent 13 batters to the plate in the top of the 4th, scoring 11 runs on eight hits to take control of the contest. The War Hawks added two more runs in teh 5th to extend their lead to 13-6 before UTD got a pair back in the 6th.

Emily Schroeder got things started with an RBI double down the left field line with one out in the 2nd, scoring Jessica Vlasek. Two batters later, Avery Markley rough home Schroeder with a double of her own before Matee Simon completed the three-run 2nd with a single to left center, scoring Markley. Elizabeth Brann lifted UTD to a 4-0 lead with a solo home run with one out in the 3rd. Later in the 3rd, Vlasek added an RBI single, scoring Megan Todd, and Gabi Langille extended the lead to six runs with an RBI on a sacrifice bunt, scoring Vlasek.

After McMurry scored 13 runs over the next two frames, the Comets got back on the scoreboard in the 6th with a run on a War Hawk error and and a final tally on a Brann groundout.

The Comets collected 10 hits off of three McMurry pitchers, leaving eight runners on base.
