TUCSON, AZ (02.08.20) - The UT Dallas baseball team collected its first win of the new season Saturday afternoon with a 17-8 victory over Linfield to close out the Cactus Classic, played at the Kino Sports Complex.
The Comets (1-2) pounded out 17 hits, scoring in all but two innings as they bounced back from back-to-back losses to nationally ranked opponents to open the 2020 campaign. UTD broke open the contest with a six-run 3rd and added four runs in the bottom of the 8th to seal the victory.
UTD tied a program record with three triples in the lop-sided win as
Jacob Perry,
Nick Williby and
Hunter Cheek each collected three-bag hits. This was the fourth time in Comet history the squad hit three triples and first time since the 2006 season. The Comets added three doubles, two coming off the bat of
A.J. Liu, to finish with six extra-base hits.
Liu finished 4-for-6 with three runs scored while Williby, Cheek and
Zach Jordan each had three-hit performances. Williby and Jordan each finished with three RBI.
Charles Bass (1-0) earned the win, tossing 4.0 innings in relief of starter
Ryan Vera.
The Comets return to action next weekend with a three-game series at University of Redlands in Redlands, Calif Game one of the set is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. (Central) Friday.
