BELTON, TX (03.10.20) - The UT Dallas baseball team was handed just its second loss in its last 10 games Tuesday afternoon as the Comets dropped an 8-5 decision at Mary Hardin-Baylor in non-conference play.
Seven pitchers took the mound for the Comets (now 11-5) as they rested their starting rotation for this weekend's three games in Austin in a classic hosted by Concordia Texas. UTD will open the weekend Saturday at 2:30 p.m. against MIT. The Comets will the face MIT again Sunday 11 a.m. before meeting host and No. 22-ranked CTX at 2 p.m. that same day.
The Comets opened Tuesday's scoring with two runs in the top of the 1st, but host UMHB answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the frame. The Cru posted three runs over the next two innings before UTD knotted the game, 5-5, with a three-spot in the 4th. However, UMHB regained the lead with a run in the 5th and added two late runs to pull away for the victory and snap a seven-game losing skid.
A.J. Liu put the Comets on the scoreboard in the 1st with an RBI to right, scoring lead-off hitter
Chandler Boyd, who opened the game with a first-pitch double off the left field wall.
Connor Allred would later come home in the frame on a double play ball.Â
Down 5-2 in the 4th, used three straight RBI singles by
Nick Williby, Boyd and Allred to push three runs across and tie the contest. But, that would be all the offense the Comets could muster, leaving two runners on base in the frame. UTD was held hitless in both the 5th and 6th before getting a lead-off single by Liu in the 7th, but another double play would end any chance of a rally. After going down in order in the 8th, the Comets put two runners on in the 9th, thanks to an error and
Luke Richter single to left, bringing the game-tying run to the plate. But a pop up to left side of the infield would end the game.
The Comets would pound out 12 hits with the top three batters in the order going a combined 7-for-15. Allred was 3-for-5 while Boyd and Liu each went 2-for-5.
Deylan Moreno added a 2-for-4 performance.
