Volleyball Edged by Concordia Texas in Five-Set ASC Road Match

AUSTIN, TX (10.23.21) - One day after earning its biggest win of the season, the UT Dallas volleyball team suffered a five-set road loss at Concordia Texas in ASC play Saturday afternoon.

The Comets (13-9, 11-4 ASC) still maintain their hold on second place in the ASC standings heading into the final week of the regular season and need two wins over their final three matches to lock down a first-round by in the ASC Championship Tournament next month. UTD returns to action Tuesday with a 6 p.m. home match against East Texas Baptist to kick off a three-match home stand to close the regular season.

Allison Owen led the Comets with 14 kills, hitting .310, while adding seven digs and four blocks in the squad's second-straight five set dual. Gabi Sommerfield added 12 kills and six blocks while Catherine Croft had 11 kills.

The host Tornados (9-13, 9-7 ASC) opened match with a close 25-23 victory, but UTD bounced back with a dominant 25-14 win in the second set to even the match. CTX responded with a 25-20 third-set victory before the Comets took the fourth set, 25-20, to force the deciding fifth stanza.

Trailing 8-7 in the fifth, the Comets rallied with three-straight points to take a 10-8 advantage. A Sommerfield kill evened the set before Sommerfield and Croft combined for a block to give UTD the lead. Madison Ball then pushed the Comet advantage to two points with a service ace.

After the Tornados evened the match with two quick points, UTD again used a three-point run to seemingly take back control. The Comets used a Croft kill, a block by Sommerfield and Owen and a Tornado error to move within two points of the victory. However, CTX rolled off fourth consecutive  points to earn their first match point at 14-13. After a Sommerfield kill to re-tie the set, CTX locked down the victory with a kill followed by a match-ending Comet error.

The Comets hit .184 for the match while collecting 11 service aces, four by setter Emma Sevening. Sevening and Sydney Fitt each contributed 20 assists in the UTD 6-2 offense while Ball led the Comets with 14 digs.
