RICHARDSON, TX (12.21.21) - The UT Dallas men's basketball team erased a 10-point second-half deficit to rally for a 70-68 home win over East Texas Baptist Tuesday night in ASC play.
Trailing 51-41 with just under 14 minutes left to play, the Comets (7-3, 4-2 ASC) used a 14-4 run over next five minutes, thanks to back-to-back three-pointers from
James Curtis and
Kameron Pruitt during that stretch. However, UTD would not grab a lead until 33 seconds remaining in the contest after a pair of Pruitt free throws. Pruitt's free shots gave the Comets a 69-68 lead, their first since early in the opening half, and UTD would get a stop on the Tigers next possessions before adding a late
Donovan Souter free throw.
ETBU (4-7, 2-4 ASC) had a late chance for a game-winner, but Jayden Williams' three-pointer fell off target and Curtis corralled the rebound to secure the Comet victory, snapping the squad's only two-game losing skid of the season.
Curtis closed the night with his first-career 'double-double', ended the come-from-behind victory with 19 points and 11 rebounds, both game highs and career bests. Curtis was 8-for-14 from the field, hitting a trey, and was 2-for-2 from the free-throw stripe. Pruitt added 14 points while
Hunter Stevens rounded out the Comets in double figures with 12 points.Stevens, Souter and
Luke Kiser each dished out four assists.
The two squads traded leads early in the contest, but the final lead by the Comets was 8-6 with just over 15 minutes to play before the break. UTD enter Tuesday's contest attempting 28 three-pointers per outing, but was just 3-of-6 from beyond the arc and trailed the visiting Tigers, 41-37, at intermission. The Comets closed the game just 5-of-13 from three-point range, matching a season-low for makes and setting a new low mark this season in attempts.Â
The Comets will take off nine days before returning to the courts when they host Hendrix in a non-conference game on Thursday, Dec. 30. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.
