Comets Hold On For 74-69 Home Win Over Sul Ross State

RICHARDSON, TX (12.04.21) - The UT Dallas men's basketball team continued its strong start to the 2021-22 season with a 74-69 home win over Sul Ross State Saturday afternoon in ASC play.

The Comets (6-1, 3-0 ASC) led SRSU by as many as 12 points in the second half but had to hold off the Lobos down the stretch for the squad's third-straight victory. UTD will take nearly two weeks off before its next outing when the Comets visit Mary Hardin-Baylor on Thursday, Dec. 16, in their first ASC road game of the season.

Kolton Pruitt led the Comets with 22 points, hitting 5-of-8 three-pointers, while Donovan Souter had 16 points and Cole Williams came off the bench 10 points. Kameron Pruitt finished with six points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots, one shy of the program single-game record.

The Lobos (4-4, 2-2 ASC) scored the opening bucket and held an quick 4-2 lead before UTD grabbed control of the contest early in the opening half. Three-pointers by Kolton Pruitt and Souter helped ignite a 17-5 run as the Comets led by 12 points, 21-9, with 12:32 left before halftime after a Williams jumper. UTD led the Lobos by as many as 19 points later in the half before settling for a 39-28 cushion at the break.

SRSU kept within single digits for the majority of the second half, but would not climb closer than six points until the final two minutes of the contest. With the Comets leading 72-61 with just under five minutes remaining, the Lobos went on an 8-0 run to draw within three points for the first time since early in the first half with a Logan Dixon trey with 1:40 on the clock. However, SRSU would get just two shots off in the final 90 seconds, sandwiched around a Luke Kiser breakaway layup.

The Comets closed the night hitting 11-of-28 three-pointers, connecting on double-digit long-range shots for the fourth time in seven games this season. UTD is currently averaging 9.6 made three-pointer per game so far this fall. UTD shot 46.8 percent from the field and were just 5-of-7 from the foul line.
