RICHARDSON, T (02.06.21) - The UT Dallas softball team left a combined 12 runners on base as the Comets dropped both ends of a season-opening home doubleheader to Centenary, 2-0 and 2-1, Saturday afternoon.
The Comets (0-2) outhit Centenary in both contests, but managed just a single run on 13 hits through the 14 innings of play. UTD will look to pick up its first win of the season Sunday afternoon with a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Trinity in San Antonio.
GAME 1 - Centenary 2, UTD 0
The Comets collected seven hits, but left eight runners on base in a 2-0 loss to Centenary to open the 2021 season.
Avery Markley was 2-for-3 while
Ashley Ambrosy finished 2-for-4 from the lead-off spot in the shutout loss.
Down 1-0 in the middle of the 3rd, the Comets got runners on second and third in both the 3rd and 4th frames only to finish each inning scoreless. The Ladies added a second run in the 5th to double their lead before UTD made two late attempts to rally from behind. The Comets picked up a one-out single from
Megan Todd in the 6th, followed by a wild pitch, to put their possible first run of the day just 60 feet away. However, a strikeout and fly out left UTD two runs down.
The Comets then put runners on first and second with just one out in the 7th, putting the game-winning run at the plate, but a groundout followed by a game-ending strikeout closed the contest.
GAME 2 - Centenary 2, UTD 1
The Comets opened the scoring in the second game of the night cap with a single run in the bottom of the 1st, but were held scoreless the rest of the game in a 2-1 loss to Centenary.
Ambrosy led off the Comets' 1st with a single up the middle and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by
Alexia Mullen.
Charlie Burns then picked up the RBI with a run-scoring single to center to lift UTD to a 1-0 advantage. Centenary answered in the top of the 2nd to knot the game and picked up a solo home run by Britlyn Garrett to lead off the 4th.Â
The Comets outhit Centenary, 6-5, in the loss but were retired in order in three of the final four innings.
Ambrose was 2-for-3 while Mullen and
Gabi Langille were both 1-for-2. Burns and
Mikayla Kanetzky each finished 1-for-3.
