Comets Edged by Concordia Texas, 6-5, in Series Opener

RICHARDSON, TX (03.19.21) - The UT Dallas softball team let one slip away Friday night as the Comets dropped a 6-5 home decision against Concordia Texas to open a three-game American Southwest Conference weekend series.

The Comets (now 1-10, 1-6 ASC) took an early 5-0 lead only to watch the visiting Tornados score six unanswered funs over the final three innings to steal the series opener. The two teams will return to the UTD Softball Field Saturday for a 12 p.m. doubleheader.

UTD loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the 3rd after a walk by Sarah Lewis followed by back-to-back bunt singles by Devyn Yanello and Ashley Ambrosy. Jordan Evans opened the scoring with an RBI groundout to to shortstop, scoring Lewis, to give the Comets a 1-0 lead. Yanello then came home on a Nicole Peters sacrifice fly to double the Comet advantage. Mikayla Kanetzy then stepped up with a key two-out sight to right, scoring Ambrosy, to push the UTD lead to 3-0. Finally, the Comets took advantage of a two-out error by CTX, allowing both Kanetzky and Avery Markley to score later in the frame.

However, the Tornados (8-7, 3-4 ASC) got one run back in the top of the 5th and scored four in the 6th, three off a homer by Ashley Hallmark, to knot the game, 5-5. CTX would open the 7th with a double by Ashley Soto and pinch runner Hailey Flores stole third and scored on a wild pitch to complete the scoring.
