JACKSON, MS (03.26.21) - The UT Dallas men's soccer team's slim halftime lead would not hold up as the Comets wrapped up the regular season with a 1-1 tie at Belhaven Friday night in American Southwest Conference play.
Sophomore forward
Nicholas Trest accounted for the only offense for the Comets (now 4-0-1) as he tallied his first career goal in the 42nd minute. Trest collected a long pass from midfield by teammate
Oliver Hamby and beat the Blazer keeper with a shot into the left side netting to give UTD a 1-0 advantage at the break. That lead would hold until the 79th minute when the Blazers finally countered with the equalizer by Brady Jacobs, a goal which would send the game to overtime.
Each team managed just a single shot in the first extra 10 minutes with neither squad finding frame. The host Blazers (now 3-3-1) out-shot UTD, 3-1, in the second overtime period, with two shots on goal, but UTD keeper
Trey Nickel kept Belhaven out of the net.
Trest and
Nahome Abraham both finished with three shots on the night while
Jovi Munoz and
Brandon Buchanan each took two shots. The Comets out-shot Belhaven, 18-7, but ended the draw with just five shots on goal. Nickel made two saves in a full 110 minutes in goal for the Comets.
The Comets wrapped up the ASC's East Division before the start of Friday's match and will host a league quarterfinal game Thursday, Apr. 1, at 8 p.m. against an opponent yet to be determined.
