ABILENE, TX (03.30.21) - Junior second baseman
Ramon Garza went 5-for-5 from the plate with three RBI as he led the UT Dallas baseball team to a 12-2 road win over Hardin-Simmons Tuesday afternoon in non-conference play.
Garza's five hits tied a Comet single-game record as he picked up a pair of doubles and scored twice in the run-rule victory over the Cowboys at Hunter Field. The San Antonio native and Cornell transfer became the 21st player in Comet history to record a five-hit game.
The Comets (now 11-6) scored in each of the first three innings to jump out to an early 7-1 lead and collected home runs from
Daniel Zamora and
A.J. Liu in their fourth win in five outings. Liu and Zamora each collected run-scoring singles in the top of the 1st to give UTD a quick 3-0 cushion before Garza added his first RBI in the 2nd, a single up the middle. Zamora added a two-run blast in the 3rd to push the Comets' lead to 6-1 before Garza pushed across another run in the frame on a double down the left field line.
UTD added a bases-loaded walk by
Zac Vorst in the 5th and would lead the Cowboys, 8-2, heading to the 7th where Liu put the game out of reach with a two-run homer to left. Garza added an RBI single in the 8th and Comets extended the lead to double digits two batters later on a sacrifice by Vorst.
Zamora was 3-for-4 with his third home run of the season, knocking in four runs, while Liu was 2-for-5 with his team-leading fourth long ball of the spring. The Comets used eight pitchers in the midweek contest, each tossing one inning.
The Comets return home Thursday to open a three-game American Southwest Conference series with East Texas Baptist with a single game at 12 p.m. The two teams will then wrap up the set with a 12 p.m. doubleheader Friday.
