ALPINE, TX (03.05.21) - The UT Dallas softball team opened a three-game American Southwest Conference weekend series at Sul Ross State Friday afternoon with a pair of high-scoring defeats.
The Comets (now 1-9, 1-4 ASC) dropped the series opener to SRSU, 13-5, before suffering a close 11-10 loss in the Friday's second game. The two teams will close the series with a single game at 11 a.m. Saturday.
GAME 1 - SRSU 13, UTD 5 (6 inn.)
The host Lobos used a six-run 4th inning to pull away for a 13-5 win over the Comets to kick off Friday's doubleheader.
The Comets opened the scoring with single runs in both the 1st and 2nd frames, but SRSU quickly took a 4-2 lead after three innings of play. UTD rallied with a three-run 4th to regain the lead, 5-4, before the Lobos scored nine unanswered runs to end the contest.
Nicole Peters knocked in
Jordan Evans with a single in the top of the 1st to kick things off and
Sarah Lewis was able to score on a Lobo error in the 2nd as the Comets snagged a 2-0 cushion. Down 4-2 in the top of the 4th,
Avery Markley blasted a solo shot in to draw the Comets back within a run before Evans knotted teh game with an infield single, scoring
Megan Todd. The Comets took back the lead when Peters was hit by a pitch later in the frame with the bases loaded.
Gabi Langille finished the game 2-for-2 with a run scored while Evans was 2-for-4.
GAME 2 - SRSU 11, UTD 10
The Comets fell behind early but made a late surge before falling to SRSU, 11-10, in Friday's night cap.
UTD again opened the scoring with a single run in the 1st as
Mikayla Kanetzky brought home Ashley Ambrose with a single to center. However, the Lobos plated four runs in the bottom of the frame and two more in the 2nd to take a 6-1 lead.
The Comets answered with four runs in the top of the 3rd, capped by a three-run home run by Todd, but the Lobos responded with a five-run 4th to go ahead 11-5.
UTD got a run back run int he 5th on a Langille double, scoring
Charlie Burns, before plating four runs in the 6th to draw within a single tally. Peters opened the 6th-inning with a double to center, scoring Burns. Kanetzky then brought home Evans with a sac fly, cutting the SRSU lead to 11-8. Markley and Burns then added RBI singles later in the frame to complete the scoring.
Ambrosy wsa 4-for-5 from the lead-off spot with two runs scored while Markley was 3-for-4. Five other Comets collected multi-hit performances as UTD had a season-high 18 hits.
