Hot Comet Bats Lead To Another Series Win at Belhaven

JACKSON, MS (04.10.21) -The UT Dallas baseball team picked up its fifth American Southwest Conference series victory Saturday afternoon, capping off a three-game set with Belhaven with a seven-inning 16-4 victory.

The Comets (15-8 overall) continued their climb toward the top of the ASC season standings, winning two of three from the Blazers (16-11, 11-7). UTD split a doubleheader with Belhaven Friday, winning 9-1 before dropping a 6-2 nightcap.

Saturday was a total team effort as the Comets pounded out 17 hits, including five for extra bases. UTD tallied five home runs in the three games, running their total long-ball count to 21 over the last month. Marcos Villegas and Deylan Moreno added to the total Saturday.

UTD rallied to the score 2-2 in the 3rd inning, then cranked up the offense over the next four frames for 14 more runs, ending the game early based on the ASC's "getaway day" rule.

Seven Comets had multi-hit games with Jacob Perry and Villegas tallying three hits each while Zac Vorst and Hunter Cheek were both 2-for-4 with a combined seven RBI.

Starter Kenny Garza (3-2) picked up the win while Ben Soule held the Blazers scoreless for the final two innings.

After falling behind 2-0 early, UTD tied the score in the 3rd with a two-out rally that included a Perry triple and an RBI single from Ramon Garza. The Comets then took the lead for good with two more runs in the 4th, courtesy of a two-run home run from Villegas.

They stretched the lead to 8-2 with a four-run 5th inning. After A.J. Liu and Vorst reached, Cheek delivered a 2-RBI double and scored ahead of Moreno on his home run.

Belhaven got two runs back in the 6th, but UTD answered with authority in the 7th. Luke Richter, Villegas and Perry loaded the bases and came home on RBI hits from Liu, Vorst and Cheek to stretch the lead out to its final 16-4.

The Comets are back at home on Tuesday for a 2 pm non-conference matchup with McMurry.
