Women's Soccer Battles HSU to 1-1 Draw in ASC Title Bout, Fall in PKs

RICHARDSON, TX (04.10.21) - The UT Dallas women's soccer team closed out the spring with a 1-1 draw against Hardin-Simmons in the American Southwest Conference championship game with the Cowgirls winning their 18th straight league title on penalty kicks (4-3).

The Comets (6-0-2) fell behind early after an HSU goal by Rachel Bean in the 20th minute on a header off a corner kick. UTD found the equalizer in the 62nd minute when Sofia Munoz netted her team-leading fifth goal of the spring after cross from the right by Sierra Foster. It was only the third goal the Cowgirls had surrendered all season.

UTD freshman keeper Megan Hannah made 13 saves, two shy of the program record, as he was forced to face 29 shots by the Cowgirls in the match. The Comets finished with nine shots, five on frame, while HSU had 15 shots on target.

Foster led the squads with three shots, two on goal, while Munoz and Bella Granada each took two shots.

Munoz, Foster and Hannah were each named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Comets were making their 10th all-time appearance in the ASC title game and first since 2013. The match was almost an exact duplicate of the 2004 ASC championship match. In that one, the Comets and Cowgirls were knotted 1-1 after regulation and two overtime periods. ASC by-laws at that time declared the two teams as Co-Champions, but HSU advanced into the NCAA national tournament with the ASC's automatic berth after winning a penalty kick shootout. Those by-laws have since been changed.
