RICHARDSON, TX (04.17.21) - The UT Dallas softball team notched a walk-off win for the first time this season Saturday night as the Comets rallied for a 4-3 win over Louisiana College to kick off a three-game American Southwest Conference series with the Wildcats.
Sarah Lewis knocked in the final two runs of the night with bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 7th as she lifted the Comets (now 4-22, 2-17 ASC) to just their second league win of the spring, snapping a 15-game ASC losing skid.
Down 3-2 in the bottom of the 7th,
Alexia Mullen opened the Comets' half of the frame with an infield single, but was thrown out at second base after a stellar play by the LC third baseman on an
Ashley Ambrosy ground ball one batter later.
Jordan Evans then singled down the left field line, giving the Comets runners on first and second with one out. The Wildcats (now 9-19, 4-12 ASC) had a chance to get out of the inning and close out the victory, but an error on a potential game-ending double play kept the Comets alive with the bases loaded. Lewis drilled the very next pitch to right center, scoring Ambrosy and Evans.
The Wildcats opened the scoring with a run in the top of the 1st and added two runs in the 3rd to take a 3-0 lead. Lewis would get the Comets on the scoreboard with an RBI single in the 4th, scoring Evans, and
Megan Todd drew UTD within a run in the bottom of the 6th with a sacrifice fly, scoring pinch-runner
Alexis Brown.
Devyn Yanello (3-8) earned the win in the circle for the Comets, scattering 10 hits while giving up three runs in a complete-game performance. Yanello struck out three while issuing two walks. Lewis finished 2-for-4 with three RBI. As a team, the Comets collected 10 hits, their third-most in a conference game this season.
The two teams will return to the diamond Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader to wrap up the three-game series.
