Comets Take Two More From La. College, Complete Sweep of 'Cats

RICHARDSON, TX (04.18.21) - The UT Dallas softball team continued to find its rhythm on Sunday as the Comets earned two more wins over Louisiana College, completing a three-game sweep over the Wildcats in American Southwest Conference play.

The Comets (now 6-22, 4-17 ASC) collected not only its first sweep of a league opponent this season Sunday, but took their first series win this spring after claiming wins of 4-2 and 8-7. UTD rallied for a 4-3 win over LC (now 9-21, 4-14 ASC) in the series opener Saturday night.

UTD will look to keep its win streak alive this weekend with a three-game ASC series at LeTourneau. The two teams will open the set with a 5 p.m. doubleheader Friday before closing the series with a 12 p.m. single game Saturday in Longview.

GAME 1 - UTD 4, LC 1
The Comets plated five runs in the bottom of the 5th to pull away for a 4-2 win over Louisiana College to open Sunday's doubleheader and guarantee the squad's first ASC series victory of the season.

UTD opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly by Sarah Lewis, scoring lead-off hitter Ashley Ambrosy, in the 1st, but the visiting Wildcats answered with a run in the top of the 3rd to knot the game, 1-1. The Comets regained the lead with one out in the 5th as Ambrosy scored from third on a sacrifice bunt by Nicole Peters. Avery Markley then tacked on two more runs with a two-our single to left center, scoring Jordan Evans and Emily Ng to give UTD a 4-1 advantage.

The Wildcats added a solo home run by Desiree Squires in the top of the 7th, but would not manage another base runner in the frame and the Comets completed the victory with a game-ending, diving catch by Ambrosy in foul territory.

Delana Meyer (1-4) struck out two Wildcats without issuing a walk while limiting LC to two runs on eight hits in a complete-game victory. Alexia Mullen was 2-for-3 from the nine hole while Ambrosy was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

GAME 2 - UTD 8, LC 7
The Comets had to rally late to complete their first ASC series sweep since the 2019 campaign. UTD scored two runs in the 4th and four final runs in the 5th to turn around a five-run deficit into an8-7 victory.

UTD struck first again in the bottom of the 1st on a sacrifice fly by Nicole Peters, scoring Ambrosy, but the Wildcats countered with back-to-back solo home runs by Miah Broussand and Shaye Tredinich to open the top of the 2nd. LC tacked on four more runs in the 3rd to extend its lead to 6-1.

The Comets battled back with a run in the bottom of the 3rd on an Ambrosy ground out that allowed Mullen to score. However, LC got the run back in the top of the 4th.

With one out in the bottom of the 4th, Markley would find home on a LC wild pitch and the Comets would draw within three runs later in the frame on a Clare Channel RBI single, scoring Megan Todd.

Lewis, Saturday's hero for the Comets, used a no-out double down the left field line to give UTD runners and second and third in the bottom of the 5th. Markley then tied the game with a swing of the bat, plating three on her team-leading fourth home run of the season. After a LC pitching change, Todd and Channel each singled to give the Comets runners on the corners with two outs. Mullen stepped up and plated the go-ahead run with a single through the right side of the Wildcat infield.

The Wildcats threatened in the top of the 7th with a lead-off single by KayeLea Dearmon, but a clutch double play silenced LC and handed the Comets their third straight victory.

Markley was 2-for-4 from the plate with three RBI and two runs scored while Lewis and Channel each finished 2-for-3. Alexis Brown (1-2) picked up the win in relief, holding the Wildcats to a single unearned run on six hits in 4.1 innings in the circle. Brown struck out two without a walk.
