Baseball Completes Sweep of Wildcats with 10-7 Sunday Victory

PINEVILLE, LA (04.18.21) - The UT Dallas baseball team climbed into second place in the American Southwest Conference Sunday after a come-from-behind 10-7 road win over league-leading Louisiana College to close out a three-game series with the Wildcats.

The Comets (now 19-9, 15-6 ASC) extended its season-long winning streak to five games after rallying for win over LC (now 20-9, 16-5 ASC) in the series finale. UTD easily handled the Wildcats, 11-3 and 23-2, in the first two games of the set Saturday.

Down 4-1 heading to the 5th, the Comets again used the big inning to take control of a contest as they plated six runs to turn the tables on the host Wildcats. UTD finished with just 12 hits, but managed double-digit runs for the fourth time in five outings.

The Wildcats opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the 1st before Nick Balley would get UTD on the board with an RBI groundout in the top of the 2nd. LC got the run back in the bottom of the inning and added another tally in the 3rd to take a 4-1 lead.

The Comets then used just four hits, taking advantage of three LC errors, to take a 7-4 lead on the Wildcats after their six-run 5th frame. Zac Vorst started the scoring in the inning with an RBI single through the left side, scoring Ramon Garza. After a walk drawn by Deylan Moreno to load the bases, Marcos Villegas knotted the game, 7-7, with a two-run double down the left field line. Daniel Zamora added two more runs with a two out single and would score on the play after two costly Wildcat errors.

LC cut the Comet lead back to two runs, 7-5, with a single tally in the 5th, but UTD responded in the top of the 6th with another Vorst RBI single, scoring Jacob Perry. The Comets added two key runs in the top of the 9th, on a two-out balk followed by an RBI single by Balley.

The Wildcats loaded the bases with just one out in the bottom of the 9th but Comet closer Orion Drymond forced a pair of late ground outs to end the game.

Vorst finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored while A.J. Liu was 2-for-5 and Garza was 2-for-5. Ben Soule (1-0) picked up the win in relief as he limited the Wildcats to one run on just two hits in 3.0 innings of work.

The Comets, now in a tie for second in the ASC with East Texas Baptist and one game back of leader LC, will look for a sixth win in a row Tuesday with a non-conference road game at McMurry. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Abilene.
