Extra-Inning Win Salvages Split for Comets at LeTourneau

LONGVIEW, TX (04.24.21) - The UT Dallas softball team used a 5-3, nine-inning victory in the second game of the day to collect a split at LeTourneau on Saturday to open a three-game American Southwest Conference series.

The Comets (now 7-23, 5-18 ASC) dropped the first game of the afternoon, 10-2, before salvaging the split with the extra-inning win. The two teams will wrap up the three-game set at 1 p.m. Sunday.

GAME 1 - LETU 10, UTD 2
The Comets managed just three hits and scored both runs off of LETU errors in a 10-2 loss to the host YellowJackets to open Saturday's doubleheader.

Down 2-0 after two innings, the Comets got on the board in the top of the 3rd when Alexia Mullen scored from second base after a LETU throwing error. However, the YellowJackets added three runs in the bottom of the frame and would lead UTD, 7-1, heading to the 5th.

The Comets scored their final run of the contest in the top of teh 5th as Ashley Ambrose came home on a two-out LETU error on a Nicole Peters ground ball.

GAME 2 - UTD 5, LETU 3 (9 inn.)
Peters delivered the game-winning hit as her two RBI double to left center in the top of the 9th gave the Comets a 5-3 win over LETU in Saturday's second game.

Lead-off hitter Ambrosy opened the 9th with a single up the middle and then stole second base. Jordan Evans then reached, and advanced to second, on a LETU error, giving the Comets runners at second and third. Peters sent the first pitch she saw to the left field wall, bring home both teammates.

The Comets opened the scoring with an RBI single by Peters in the top of the 1st, scoring Evans. Avery Markley then plated Peters with a triple to right and later scored on a Megan Todd single to left to give UTD an early 3-0 cushion.

LETU scored a single run in each the 4th, 6th and 7th to force extra innings. The Comets were one strike away from a win in regulation before YellowJacket Katelyn Trombley plated the tying run with a double in the 7th.

Peters finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored while Evans, Markley and Todd were each 2-for-5. Delana Meyer tossed the opening five frames for the Comets, striking out two. Alexis Brown (2-2) finished the game and gave up a single run in 4.0 innings in the circle, fanning two as well.
