LONGVIEW, TX (04.24.21) - The regionally ranked UT Dallas women's tennis team extended its winning streak to four matches Saturday afternoon as the Comets blanked LeTourneau, 9-0, to complete a perfect run through American Southwest Conference East Division play.
The Comets (now 8-3, 4-0 ASC East) earned its third straight divisional title with Saturday's victory, claiming the league's West Division crown in 2018 and 2019. No divisional titles were awarded in 2020.
UTD used three perfect 8-0 wins in doubles to play to take an early lead and lost a total of five games in singles action to lock down the shutout victory.
Kathy Joseph and
Samantha Wong, the top ranked doubles tandem in the region, won 8-0 over LETu's Bailey Deaherage and Summer Apostalo. The No. 2 duo of
Saumya Vedula and
Rebecca Jackson as well as third-flighted
Svaksha Iyengar and
Suzuka Nishino also earned 8-0 victories.
Wong was the first to complete her singles match, quickly dispatching LETU's Sierra Linssen, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2. Joseph then wrapped up the team victory with a 6-1, 6-0, win at No. 1 over Deatherage.
Vedula (No. 3, 6-0, 6-2), Nishino (No. 4, 6-1, 6-0), Jackson (No. 5, 6-0, 6-0) and
Stephanie Joseph (No. 6, 6-0, 6-1) also won by straight sets.
The Comets close the regular season Sunday with a 1 p.m. non-conference match at Austin College.
