Comets Stop Skid With Doubleheader Sweep of Austin College

SHERMAN, TX (04.06.21) - The UT Dallas softball team posted its two-highest scoring outputs of the season Tuesday night, tallying 31 total runs in a non-conference doubleheader road sweep of Austin College.

The Comets (now 3-19) opened Tuesday's twin bill with a 17-7, five-inning victory before rallying for a 14-7 win over the host Lady 'Roos (now 2-14) in the night cap. UTD will return to American Southwest Conference play Friday as the Comets open a three-game weekend home series with No. 10-ranked Belhaven with a 5 p.m. doubleheader.

GAME 1 - UTD 17, AC 7 (5 inn.)
The Comets used a nine-run 3rd inning and took advantage of six AC errors as they snapped a 12-game losing streak with a 17-7, run-rule victory over the host Lady 'Roos in the first game of the night.

UTD tallied just 10 hits while drawing six walks as eight different Comets scored at least one run in the lop-sided win. Megan Todd was 2-fof-3 with five RBI and two runs scored while Nicole Peters finished 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Mikayla Kanetzky also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with three RBI.

The Comets plated three runs in the top of the 1st to take an early lead as Todd and Kanetzky each had run-scoring hits. Peters then picked up her first RBI in the 2nd after one of the AC errors in the contest.

Up 5-1 in the 3rd, the Comets would score nine runs on just five hits to extend the lead to 13 runs. After a bases-loaded walk by Alexia Mullen to open the scoring in the frame, Peters added two RBI with a single to left. Sarah Lewis then plated a run on a double to left center.

Two batters later, Todd cleared the bases with a double down the left field line and Kanetzky quickly brought home her teammate with a single. Gabi Langille completed the nine-run inning with a RBI double to right center.

The Lady 'Roos got two runs back in the bottom of the 3rd before UTD tacked three final runs in the 4th. The Comets got two runs off a single by Peters, followed by an error, and Peters came in later in the 4th on a sacrifice fly by Todd.

GAME 2 - UTD 14, AC 7
The Comets started their first winning streak of the season with a 14-7, come-from-behind win over Austin College in Tuesday's late game.

UTD tallied a season-high 21 hits and scored the 12 runs over the final three frames to rally from a 6-2 deficit after four innings.

Avery Markley gave the Comets a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st with a double to center, scoring Peters, but Austin College answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-1 advantage.

Mullen cut the lead in half in the 2nd with an RBI infield single, scoring Kanetzky. However, AC plated two runs in the 2nd and got a solo home run in the 4th to snag a 6-2 cushion.

The Comets pushed four runs across in the top of the 5th to knot the game, thanks to RBI hits by Markley, Todd and Kanetzky. Markley singled up the middle, scoring Peters, and later scored along with Emily Ng on a double to left by Todd. Todd then found home on a Kanetzky double down the left field line.

The Lady 'Roos got a run back in the bottom of the 6th thanks to a pair of UTD errors,  to take back a slim 7-6 lead.

The Comets then put the game away in the top of the 7th with eight runs on six hits, including a grand slam home run by Peters. After loading the bases with a walk and two infield singles to open the inning, Mullen knotted the game with an RBI single to left, scoring Kanetzky. Peters then blasted her first home run of the season over the center field wall to lift UTD to a 11-7 lead. The Comets then added RBI singles by Langille and Kanetzky before completing the scoring with a pinch-hit, run-scoring groundout by Emily Schroeder.

Peters was 4-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored while Markley finished the comeback 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI of her own. Kanetzky each had three hits while Mullen and Langille had two hits each.

Devyn Yanello took the circle in the 2nd inning and completed the game, giving up just one earned run on six hits in 6.0 innings of work.
