RICHARDSON, TX (04.09.21) - In its first home games in nearly three weeks, the UT Dallas softball team returned home Friday to open a three-game American Southwest Conference series with No. 10-ranked Belhaven, dropping a pair to the visiting Blazers.
The Comets (now 3-21, 1-16 ASC) suffered a 13-3 loss to Belhaven in Friday's opener before falling to the Blazers, 14-4, in the late game. The two squads will close the three-game set with a single game at 12 p.m. Saturday at the UTD Softball Field.
GAME 1 - BU 13, UTD 3 (5 inn.)
The Blazers posted 10 runs in the top of the 1st and then held off the Comets for a 13-3, five-inning win to open Friday's twin bill.
Belhaven added another run in the 3rd and two final runs in the 4th before the Comets plated three late runs in the bottom of the 5th. With runners on second and third with two outs in the 5th, the Comets avoided the shutout loss when
Emily Ng scored from third base on an Belhaven error on a pick-off attempt at third base.
Ashley Ambrosy followed up with a triple to right center, scoring
Gabi Langille, and then scored on a
Jordan Evans single to left later in the inning.
GAME 2 - BU 14, UTD 4
The Comets struck first win two runs in the 1st but Belhaven responded with 10 runs over the next three frames to pull away for a 14-4 in Friday's second contest.
After an Ambrosy single and steal to open the Comets' half of the 1st, she would later score on a
Sarah Lewis single to right to open the scoring. Evans later scored in the inning on a Comet double-steal attempt. However, the Blazers answered with five runs in the 2nd, two in the third and three in the top of the 4th to take a 10-2 lead.
The Comets cut back into the lead with a run in the bottom of the 4th when Ng scored from third on a wild pitch. UTD tacked one final run in the 6th when Mikayla Kantezy scored from third on a bases-loaded fielder's choice by Evans. Belhaven added four final runs in the top of the 7th.
