Women's Tennis Blanks McMurry, Moves on to ASC Title Match

ABILENE, TX (05.07.21) - The UT Dallas women's tennis team will have a chance to defend its conference title Saturday as the Comets cruised to a 5-0 win over McMurry Friday morning in the semifinals of the 2021 American Southwest Conference Women's Tennis Championship Tournament, hosted by Hardin-Simmons.

The Comets (now 11-3) will play for their third-ever ASC crown Saturday when they face host HSU at 11 a.m. in battle of divisional champions.

UTD needed little effort to close doubles play up 3-0 after three quick victories over the War Hawks (now 7-8). The Comets' No. 1 team of Kathy Joseph and Samantha Wong kicked off doubles action with a brisk 8-0 win over McM's Claire Hillyer/Hope Turner. Saumya Vedula and Rebecca Jackson followed up with an 8-5 win at No. 2 before Stephanie Joseph and Svaksha Iyengar wrapped up the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win at No. 3.

Suzuka Nishino was the first to claim singles glory as she finished off Hannah DeFriend, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 4. Kathy Joseph made it an official win at No. 1 singles, handling Hillyer, 6-2, 6-1.

Wong (No. 2), Vedula (No. 3), Jackson (No. 5) and Stephanie Josehp (No. 6) were each up a set in their singles match when the contest was called.

The Comets are headed to their third straight ASC title match and the sixth championship dual in program history. UTD claimed the conference championship in 2013 and 2019. There was no ASC Tournament in 2020 due to COVID-19.
