UTD Men Rally Past Schreiner to Open ASC-SCAC Challenge

SHREVEPORT, LA (09.17.21) - After scoring two early goals, the UT Dallas men's soccer team had to break a tie in the second half as the Comets earned a 4-2 win over Schreiner Friday afternoon in non-conference play.

The Comets (3-2-1) got two goals from freshman Riley O'Donnell in the first 13 minutes of the contest only to watch Schreiner get two goals of their own late in the half to knot the game, 2-2, at the break. UTD regained the lead early in the second half and added an insurance goal late as the Comets kicked off the ASC-SCAC Challenge, hosted by Centenary, with a victory. The Comets will next face host Centenary Sunday at 5 p.m.

O'Donnell's first tally came in the 12th minute as he found the back of the net after a pass from teammate Adrian Vasquez. O'Donnell then scored 69 seconds later to lift the Comets to a 2-0 lead, assisted this time by Hashem Shehata.

The Mountaineers cut the lead in half with a goal in the 20th minute and evened the contest, 2-2, in the 25th minute.

Brandon Bohn gave the Comets back the lead in the 52nd minute, assisted by O'Donnell, and Kane Kidwell completed the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 66th minute.

The Comets closed the match with 21 shots, 10 on frame, with O'Donnell, Kidwell and Brandon Buchanan each taking four shots. UTD held the Mountaineers to just six shots, five on goal. UTD keeper Trey Nickel made three saves, playing the first 72-plus minutes.
