Comets Stay Unbeaten with DH Sweep of Texas Lutheran

RICHARDSON, TX (02.19.22) - The 25th-ranked UT Dallas baseball team kept its perfect record in tact Saturday afternoon, sweeping a non-conference doubleheader from Texas Lutheran, 6-3 and 15-10, in the Comets' home opener.

The Comets (5-0) came from behind in each game, keeping the perennial powerhouse Bulldogs (0-4) winless in four starts. The five-game opening win streak is the best start for UTD Baseball since the 2006 season.

The two teams will meet in the final game of the three-game series Sunday at 12 noon at the UTD Baseball Field.

A.J. Liu led the Comets with a 5-for-8 afternoon, driving in five runs and crushing a go-ahead home run in the opener.. Andrew Skivington combined for a 4-for-9 afternoon, driving in a pair of runs in each game. Centerfielder Brayshon Savage also picked up a pair of hits in each contest, and made a key defensive play in the opener to quash a 7th-inning TLU comeback attempt.

GAME ONE: UTD 6, TLU 3

Down 2-0 after three innings, the Comets got a three-run home run from A.J. Liu in the 4th to take over the lead. Skyvington then singled with two outs to bring home Lucas Abbott, and the Comets were in control.

Third-year pitcher Ryan Vera took over for starter Carter Cochrane in the 4th, and picked up the win with a 3.1-inning outing as UTD tacked on two more runs in the 6th. Zac Vorst scored on a single from Marcos Villegas, who later came around on Skivington's second hit of the game to make it 6-2 before the Bulldogs came up in the 7th with a last-ditch effort.

After a leadoff single, Savage made the defensive play of the game, diving on the run in right centerfield for the first out. The play proved crucial as TLU followed by loading up the bases. The Bulldogs, however, managed just a single run before Orion Drymond shut the door, picking up his third save of the year.

GAME TWO: UTD 15, TLU 10

Again, the Comets dug an early hole as the the Bulldogs got a pair of 1st-inning home runs to go up 4-0 before UTD ever came to the plate. The Comets answered, though, with a two-out rally in their half of the frame when Villegas delivered a single to left, scoring Liu and Vorst to cut the lead in half.

UTD then tied the score with another two-our rally in the 2nd. Ramon Garza got the first of three doubles in the game to knot the game at 4-4. Another two runs scored with a Liu groundout and a Villegas single and the Comets were on their way. For the first five innings, UTD put together 15 runs with 15 hits and just had to hold on as TLU managed just single runs in the 3rd and 4th before a last-gasp four-run rally in the 9th.

In addition to Garza, Liu, Vorst and Deylan Moreno all doubled in the game. The big inning for the Comets came in the 5th when they added six runs with just three hits, but four walks courtesy of four TLU pitchers.

Second-year pitcher Kenny Garza picked up the win with a 2.1-inning relief appearance, followed with effective appearances from freshman Jake Jennings and transfer Brett Huff.
