RICHARDSON, Texas (02.20.22) - A dramatic finish in extra innings Sunday afternoon propelled the 25th-ranked UT Dallas baseball team to a 4-3 come-from-behind win over Texas Lutheran in the tension-filled series finale with the Bulldogs, notching a perfect 6-0 start to the Comets' season for the first time in program history.
Shortstop
Keagan Vance lifted a two-out soft liner toward right field in the bottom of the 10th inning that fell just off the tip of a diving TLU second baseman's glove for a single and allowed
Andrew Skivington to storm home from second base with the game-winning run, completing the three-game sweep of TLU (now 0-5).
The run finished off a rally for the Comets (6-0), who again had to overcome an early deficit and then fight off several late challenges by the Bulldogs with stellar defensive play.
The Comets and Bulldogs were knotted at 3-3 after UTD finally came up with a clutch hit and tied up the game in the 7th. After the Comets had stranded eight runners through the first six innings and trailed 3-0,
A.J. Liu cued a shot between first and second base to bring home
Brayshon Savage for UTD's first run. Then, with two down,
Marcos Villegas followed with a double down the left field line that scored both Liu and
Ramon Garza to tie the game.
The lead looked to be short-lived, though, as TLU loaded the bases with just one out in the 8th. But the Comets got out of the jam with a well-executed 4-2-3 double-play ball from Skivington, who got the force at home, then catcher
Deylan Moreno who's throw beat the runner to first. The Bulldogs threatened in both the 9th and 10th as well, putting two runners into scoring position, but Colon dove to knock down a hard-hit ball at first in the top of the 10th and tossed backhanded to his pitcher to end the threat.
UTD started it's half of the 10th with back to back singles from Villegas and Skivington, but the Bulldogs quickly got two outs before Villegas' game-winning hit.
Orion Drymond, who had saves in three of UTD's first five games, picked up the win in relief after shutout pitching from
Dylan Hugley,
Andrew Vorst and
Ben Soule. The top six hitters in the Comet lineup combined for 12 of UTD's 15 hits with Skivington finishing the day, 3-for-4.
UTD is next scheduled to take the field Tuesday at 6 pm on the road in Georgetown against Southwestern before returning to American Southwest Conference play at Hardin-Simmons next weekend.
