THOUSAND OAKS, CA (03.12.22) - The UT Dallas softball team kicked off its six-game California road trip Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of California Lutheran. The Comets exploded late in both games, earning wins of 12-4 and 5-3, to open Spring Break.
Now winners of six of their last seven contests, the Comets (12-3) have matched the program's win total of the last two seasons combined and will look to continue their hot start of the spring Sunday with a 2 p.m. (Central) twin bill at Occidental. UTD will then close the trip Monday with a 6 p.m. (Central) doubleheader at La Verne.
GAME 1 - UTD 12, CLU 4
Sarah Lewis blasted her second home of the season in the 2nd inning and the Comets tacked on seven runs in the final frame as they pulled away from Cal Lutheran, 12-4, in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.
UTD posted two runs in the top of the 1st inning to snag a quick 2-0 lead, but the host Regals countered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame to knot the contest. Lewis' long ball capped a three-run 3rd for the Comets as they took the lead for good in the inning. Cal Lutheran plated single runs in the 4th and 6th to draw back within a single tally before the Comets scored seven runs on six hits in the top of the 7th to secure the win.
Lewis finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI while
Ashley Ambrosy and
Megan Todd each went 2-for-4 from the plate.Â
GAME 2 - UTD 5, CLU 3
Trailing 3-0 in the 6th, the Comets scored the final five runs of the contest as UTD rallied for a 5-3 win over the Regals in Saturday's second game.
Megan Zatopek opened the scoring for UTD in the 6th with a one-out, pinch-hit infield single, scoring
Kailey Gonzales, to cut the CLU lead to 3-1. Gonzales would then draw the Comets within a run in the top of the 7th on a bases-loaded fielder's choice. Two batters later, Zatopek completed the comeback with a bases-clearing double down the left field line.
Zatopek closed the game 2-for-2 with four RBI and was the only Comet with a multi-hit performance.Â
