Comets Drop Pair to UMHB To Open Weekend Series

RICHARDSON, TX (03.18.22) - The UT Dallas softball team returned home and to league play Friday afternoon, dropping a pair of games to Mary Hardin-Baylor to open a three-game ASC series with the visiting Cru. The Comets suffered a 6-2 extra-inning defeat in the Friday's first game before dropping the night cap, 11-3.

The Comets (15-6, 7-4 ASC) will look to rebound Saturday with the series finale with UMHB at 12 p.m. at the UTD Softball Field.

GAME 1 - UMHB 6, UTD 2 (8 inn.)
After battling back to knot the game in the 7th, UMHB plated four runs in the top of the 8th to pull away from the Comets, 6-2, in the first game of Friday's twin bill.

Megan Todd gave the Comets a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st with an RBI single up the middle, scoring Ashley Ambrosy, and that slim lead would hold until the 5th when the Cru knotted the game.Todd picked up a second RBI in the bottom of the 6th with a solo home run, her team-leading sixth of the spring, but the Cru answered with a single run in the top of the 7th to force extra innings. UMHB batted around in the top of the 8th, scoring four runs on five hits and a Comet error.

Todd closed the game 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored while Ambrosy was 2-for-4 with a run scored. After allowing up a lead-off single, Emilie Hoelscher (6-3) retired 14 straight Cru batters before giving up a pair of two-out singles in the 5th. Hoelscher would give up six runs on eight hits with six strikeouts in 7.2 innings of work.

GAME 2 - UMHB 11, UTD 3 (6 inn.)
With the Comets leading 3-1 in the 5th, UMHB scored unanswered runs to close the game as the Cru finished the doubleheader sweep with an 11-3 win over UTD in six innings in Friday's second game.

The Cru struck first with a single run in the top of the 2nd but Celeste Soliz propelled the Comets to a 3-1 cushion with a two-out, three-run homer in the bottom of the 4th, her second of the season. UMHB then plated four runs in the 5th and six final runs in the sixth.
