RICHARDSON, TX (04.01.22) - The UT Dallas softball team kicked off a three-game ASC weekend home series Friday afternoon with a doubleheader split with Sul Ross State. The Comets took the opening, 5-1, before dropping the late game, 5-2, in extra innings.
The Comets (17-10, 9-8 ASC) will wrap up the set Saturday with a 12 p.m. single game with the Lobos, celebrating the contributions of the program's seven seniors prior to the contest.
GAME 1 - UTD 5, SRSU 1
After falling behind early, the Comets closed the game with five unanswered runs as they handled Sul Ross State, 5-1, in Friday's opener.
The Lobos plated a single unearned run in the top of the 1st and held that lead until the bottom of the 3rd when
Avery Markley launched her third long ball of the season, scoring
Ashley Ambrosy, to give UTD a 2-1 advantage. Markley picked up a third RBI in the 5th with a single to left, scoring Ambrosy again, and then later scored in the frame on a two-out SRSU error, giving the Comets a 4-1 cushion.
Sarah Lewis completed the Comet scoring in the 6th with a lead-off homer to left center, her third of the spring.
Devyn Yanello (6-1) tossed a gem, allowing an unearned run on six hits in a complete-game performance. Markley finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored while Ambrosy was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three stolen bases.
GAME 2 - SRSU 5, UTD 2 (8 inn.)
The Comets took a 2-1 lead on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 6th before SRSU used three late home runs to steal a 5-2 victory in eight innings.
The Lobos grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 3rd before
Nicole Peters evened the game in the 4th with an RBI double off the wall, scoring Markley. In the 6th, pinch runner
Alexia Mullen stole second base and moved to third on a ground out by Lewis. She then scored the go-ahead run on a two-out wild pitch by Lobo starter Danielle Gomez to give the Comets their first lead of the game.
However, SRSU knotted the game in the top of the 7th with a solo home run to force extra innings and added a two-run long ball in the top of the 8th to grab the split with the Comets.
Ambrosy and Peters each finished the game 2-for-4.
