BROWNWOOD TX (04.14.22) - The UT Dallas softball team opened its three-game ASC road series at Howard Payne Thursday afternoon with a pair of wins over the host Yellow Jackets. The Comets earned wins of 4-2 and 6-3.
The Comets (22-11, 14-9 ASC) will close the set with HPU Friday with a 12 p.m. single game at Lady Jackets Field.
GAME 1 - UTD 4, HPU 2
The Comets plated a pair of runs in the top of the 1st and never looked back, en route to a 4-2 win over HPU to open Thursday's doubleheader.
Megan Todd opened the scoring with an RBI single with one out in the 1st, scoring lead-off hitter
Ashley Ambrosy.
Cole Johnson followed with an RBI single of her own, scoring
Jordan Evans to lift UTD to a 2-0 advantage.Â
However, HPU countered with a single run in each the 3rd and 4th frames to even the score, 2-2. Johnson put the Comets back on top with an RBI ground out in the 5th, again scoring Evans.
Megan Cavazos added a pinch-hit RBI single, scoring
Alexia Mullen, in the 6th for an insurance run.
McKenzie Cutbirth (5-5) collected the win with a 5.2-inning performance, giving up one earned run on four scattered hits with four strikeouts.
Emilie Hoelscher earned the save with one strikeout over the final 1.1 innings.
The Comets finished the game with 10 hits with Todd leading the way with a 2-for-4 performance.
GAME 2 - UTD 6, HPU 3
A four-run opening frame propelled the Comets to a 6-3 win over HPU to close Thursday's twin bill.
The Comets scored four runs on four hits and an HPU error to grab an early 4-0 cushion.
Ashley Ambrosy scored from second on a Lady Jacket error to open the scoring in the 1st. Todd then added two more rus with a single up the middle, scoring Evans and
Avery Markley.
Nicole Peters extended the lead to four runs later in the frame with an RBI single, scoring Todd.
Todd finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored while Evans and Peters each went 2-for-4.
Hoelscher (8-4) claimed the victory in relief with 3.2 scoreless innings of work, allowing a single hit with six strikeouts.
