ASC CHAMPIONS! Comets Blank Hardin-Simmons For 3rd Straight Title

RICHARDSON, TX (04.30.22) - The UT Dallas women's tennis team earned its third consecutive and fourth all-time league title Saturday with a 5-0 win over Hardin-Simmons in the championship match of the 2022 American Southwest Conference Women's Tennis Championship Tournament, played at the UTD Tennis Courts.

TOURNAMENT CENTRAL

The Comets improved to 11-2 with Saturday's victory and will now make its fourth-ever trip to the NCAA D-III National Tournament. The field and locations for the regional round of this year's national championship event will be announced on Monday, May 9.

UTD stormed through doubles play against the Cowgirls in a battle of this year's ASC division champions. The Comets dropped just six total games throughout the doubles slate. Top-flighted Samantha Wong and Elyssa Ducret opened the scoring with an 8-2 win over HSU's Laurel Coleman and Lauren Schaeffer. Saumya Vedula and Rebecca Jackson soon followed with an 8-1 win at No. 2 over Priscilla Schimming and Jonnah Smith. Megan Zeng and Suzuka Nishino completed the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win at No. 3 against Skylar Rust and Brianne Dumas.

Wong then opened singles action with a 6-0, 6-1, win over Coleman at No. 1 to give the Comets a 4-0 advantage. Vedula, who was later named the ASC Tournament Most Valuable Player, ended the duel with a 6-2, 6-4, win over Schimming at No. 3.

At the conclusion of the match, Nishino (No. 2), Jackson (No. 5) and Tisha Nakakes-Nguyen (No. 6) were each up a set.

Joining Vedula on the All-Tournament Team were Jackson, Nakakes-Nguyen and Wong.

The Comets won their first ASC title in 2013 and then claim the championship in 2019 and 2021. There was no event in 2020 due to COVID-19. UTD became just the second Comet program to win back-to-back-back ASC championships, joining the school's volleyball program (2015, 2016, 2017).
