CLARKSVILLE, AR (04.09.22) - The UT Dallas softball team scored 26 runs over Saturday's doubleheader to earn two lop-sided wins at Ozarks in ASC play.
With wins of 14-0 and 12-1, the Comets improved to 20-11 overall after Saturday's two victories and currently sit in fifth place the ASC standings at 12-9 with three series left in the regular season.
UTD will continue its six-game road trip next weekend with a three-game ASC series at Howard Payne in Brownwood. The two teams will play a 1 p.m. doubleheader Thursday before closing the set with a 12 p.m. single game Friday.
GAME 1 - UTD 14, OZARKS 0 (5 inn.)
The Comets opened Saturday's twin bill with a 14-0, five-inning victory over Ozarks, scoring in each inning.
Megan Todd opened the scoring in the top of the 1st by bringing home
Ashley Ambrosy on a dropped fly ball by the Eagle center fielder.
Cole Johnson then doubled the Comet lead in the frame with a an RBI groundout, scoring
Jordan Evans.
Ambrosy added to the Comet lead in the 2nd with an RBI single up the middle, scoring
Kailey Gonzales.The Comets then pushed across four runs in the 3rd. Todd blasted her team-leading seventh home run of the spring to kick off the scoring in the 3rd before
Nicole Peters added a two-run double and later cored on a
Celeste Soliz single.
Alexia Mullen came home in the the 4th after stealing second and scampering home after an errant throw by the Ozarks catcher.
Olivia Reed added an RBI single to right in the frame to lift the Comets to a 9-0 cushion
Megan Cavazos belted a three-run home run in the 5th, her first of the season, to spark a five-run frame for the Comets.
Megan Zatopek and Reed both added RBI hits later in the inning to complete the scoring.
Devyn Yanello (7-2) earned the victory, tossing 3.0 scoreless frames with three hits and a strikeout.
Nicole Vasicek threw the final two innings, giving up two hits. The Comets collected 14 hits, one shy of a season high, with 13 different players recording at least one hit.
GAME 2 - UTD 12, OZARKS 1
The Comets equaled their season-high for hits in a game as they rolled to a 12-1 win over Ozarks to wrap up the three-game ASC road sweep.
Ambrosy came home for the Comets' first run of the game after an Ozarks error and
Megan Todd added another RBI on the day, scoring Evans on a second Eagle error in the frame.
Avery Markley picked up an RBI double to score another run to open the 2nd before Todd plated Evans with a sacrifice fly to push the UTD lead to 4-0 after two frames.
Johnson doubled to left center to score Todd in the 4th to give the Comets a five-run lead before the host Eagles got on the scoreboard for the only time in the doubleheader with a run in the bottom of the 5th.
The Comets then added three runs in the top of the 6th and four final runs in the 7th to close the scoring. Markley homer to center in the 6th, her fifth of the season, and Peters and Soliz each added RBIs in the frame.Â
Todd singled in the Comets' first run of the 2nd before Gonzales plated a pair with a double to left center. UTD got its final run of the day on a Peters single to left.
McKenzie Cutbirth (4-5) earned the victory in the circle with nine strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work. Cutbirth allowed one earned run on just four hits and no walks.
Marisa Mejia tossed a final 7th frame.
Markley was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scord whie Todd, Johnson, Peters and Soliz each had two-hit performances.
