Comets Take Down #18 Pirates in Four Sets

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The UT Dallas volleyball team defeated #18 Southwestern (Texas) in four sets on the Pirates' home court to wrap up the SU Invitational Saturday. 

The Comets (2-1), who received votes in the top 25 poll, dropped the first set to the Pirates (2-1) 14-25, but responded by hitting .433 with 16 kills in a 25-18 second frame win. UTD went on to hold of SU 25-15 and 25-19 to claim the upset victory.

UTD hit .193 on 46 kills, nine aces, seven blocks and 57 digs. The Pirates hit .160 with 51 kills, two aces, six blocks and 70 digs.
 
UT Dallas Notes
- The win was the first over a ranked opponent for first-year head coach Zach Villarreal.
- Senior outside hitter/middle blocker Madison Ball hit .348 with 10 kills and 11 digs for a double-double performance.
- Junior middle/right side Erin Rogers hit .500 on nine kills and two blocks.
- Abby Jones, a senior outside, added eight kills, nine digs and a career-high three blocks.
- Junior setter Emma Sevening recorded her first double-double of the year with 21 assists and 10 digs.
- Freshman middle blocker Lauren Johnson led the Comets with five blocks, while libero Rachel Baxter led all players with 16 digs.
- Mikayla Cho, a sophomore setter, added 11 assists and seven digs. 
- Catherine Croft and Ball made the All-Tournament Team.

Southwestern (Texas) Notes
- The Pirates are coming off a 2021 run of making the Second Round of the NCAA Division III Championship.
- Christina Kuras paced SU with 13 kills, three blocks and had eight digs.
- Emma White posted 10 kills and 11 digs for the double-double.
- Riley Brantley hit .412 with nine kills and three blocks.
- Annika Flora had 24 assists and 11 digs while Geneva Nedrow led the Pirates with 13 digs.

Up Next
UT Dallas will travel to Atlanta to compete in the prestigious East*West Classic on the campus of Emory University. The Comets will face Cal Lutheran at 10:30 a.m. and Washington-St. Louis at 5 p.m. on September 9.
