FULL ASC RELEASE
RICHARDSON, Texas - The #20 UT Dallas women's golf team was projected to finish second in the American Southwest Conference preseason poll, released Thursday.
The Comets, who will be under first year head coach
Cole Sondgeroth in 2022-23, gained 67 points in the poll, behind defending champion Mary Hardin-Baylor's 80 points and eight first place votes. UC Santa Cruz was picked third 66 points and a first place vote, followed by East Texas Baptist with 54.
UT Dallas is coming off a third place finish at last season's American Southwest Conference Championship. They also ranked third in the league with a 318.5 stroke average.
In addition, seniors
Karen Alvarez and
Karen Lee were among the 16 on the Golfers to Watch List. Alvarez was the ASC Golfer of the Year, ASC Women's Golf Distinguished Scholar-Athlete of the Year, NCAA Elite 90 winner and qualifier for the NCAA Division III Championship. Lee transfers in from NCAA Division II member Henderson State in Arkadelphia, Ark., where she was an All-Great American Conference honoree and national qualifier.
Junior
Maddy Vilven also returns after an all-conference honorable mention campaign, along with sophomores
Sofia Trevino and
Danielle Dimafelix. Freshman
Shreya Krishnan rounds out the squad.
The season will start on September 10 at the Transylvania Fall Invite in Lexington, Ky. The Comets will play in the DIII National Preview in Florida September 18-19. They will host the Lidlifter in Kingwood, Texas and the Texas Cup in Plano in March. The 2023 ASC Women's Golf Championship will be held at Nutcracker Golf Club in Granbury, Texas April 23-25.
