AUSTIN - The UT Dallas men's basketball team defeated Concordia Texas 87-82 at the Concordia Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Comets (19-4, 14-2 ASC) remain in a tie with Mary Hardin-Baylor for first place in the American Southwest Conference standings. The Cru, however holds the tiebreaker over UTD with two games to play. The Comets will finish as one of the top three seeds in the ASC Championship Tournament with the top seed hosting the semifinals and finals, the second seed getting a bye and the third seed hosting a quarterfinal game on Tuesday, February 21.
UTD shot 50 percent (17-for-34) in the first half and took a 43-40 lead over the Tornados (13-9, 10-6 ASC) at the break. The Comets led by 10 with 5:48 remaining in the game, but the home team chipped the deficit down to 85-82 with 18 seconds left. Sophomore guard
Luke Kiser hit a pair of free throws with 14 seconds on the clock to seal the five-point victory for UT Dallas.
The Comets shot 48.5 percent (33-for-68) overall, 12-for-26 from three-point range and 9-for-13 at the free throw line. They also had 37 rebounds, 26 assists, one block, 10 steals and 18 turnovers.
Concordia shot 48.3 percent (28-for-58) from the field, 13-for-32 from outside and 13-for-17 at the line with 34 boards, 17 assists, five blocks, 11 steals and 23 turnovers.
UT Dallas Notes
- Guard
Kyle Poerschke went 10-for-13 from the field, en route to 23 points.
- Kiser finished with 13 points, seven assists and four steals.
- Senior guard
Donovan Souter scored a season-high 12 points, hitting four three-pointers in 13 minutes off the bench.
- Freshman forward
Austin Page scored 10 points, his fifth consecutive double-digit scoring performance.
- Senior center
Will Isaac scored eight points and grabbed 11 rebounds. He also had a blocked shot, moving into fourth place on the school's career blocks list with 64.
- Senior guard
Hunter Stevens dished out four assists to move into fourth place on the career list with 317.
Concordia Texas Notes
- Jaylon Johnson led all players with 28 points to go with five assists and five steals.
- Antoine Henderson scored 12 points and Colby Kalbacher added 10.
- Tariq Muhammad led the Tornados with seven rebounds.
