UTD and Ozarks Split to Open Series

CLARKSVILLE, Ark. - The UT Dallas baseball team had a double-header American Southwest Conference split with Ozarks at Lonnie Qualls Field to open the teams' three-game series Saturday.

The host Eagles (4-14, 3-5 ASC) won the seven-inning opener 8-6 on a walk-off grand slam, but the Comets (10-8, 4-4 ASC) rebounded to take game two 13-12.

In game one, UTD took a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Ozarks recorded three consecutive singles before shortstop Ethan Cash hit a grand slam over the fence in right center to give the home team the 8-6 victory.

The Comets scored three runs in the second and designated hitter Grayson Coltharp hit a solo homer in the third to go up 4-0. The Eagles answered with a run in the fourth and back-to-back RBI-singles in the fifth to cut their deficit to 4-3. Second baseman Andrew Skivington hit another solo home run in the sixth and another run scored on an error give UTD the 6-3 advantage. Ozarks made the game 6-4 in the bottom of the frame on a Kagen Kennedy pinch sacrifice fly.

In the nightcap, the Comets outhit the Eagles 20-13 and held on to the win despite committing six errors. 

A two-run homer by Dru Didway gave UO a 2-1 lead in the first followed by another Eagle run in the second to go up 3-1. UTD answered with four runs in the third with an RBI-double from Luke Finn, a two-run blast by Brayshon Savage and another RBI-double from Keagan Vance.

The Eagles answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to tie it up at five each. Robert Hines hit a sacrifice fly and Dylan Bivins drove in a run on a base hit in the fourth to regain the lead for the Comets. Skivington added his second solo home run of the day in the fifth to go up 8-5. Ozarks once again tied it in the fifth after three runs on four hits and an error.

A two-run homer over the right field fence from Hines and a bases-loaded walk drawn by catcher Coleman Camp gave UTD the lead for good at 11-8 in the sixth. Savage loaded the bases in the eighth with a RBI-single before the Eagles ended the frame with a triple play. 

In the ninth, Skivington led off by reaching on an error, was moved to third on a Jaeger Self double and scored on a base hit by Hines, making the game 13-9. Ozarks took advantage of three errors and a pair of hits in the bottom of the ninth befored the Comets ended the game with a 13-12 victory.

- Skivington hit a home run in both contests and extended his hitting streak to 16 games.
- Hines was 4-for-5 with five RBI in game two.
- Bivins was also 4-for-5 with a RBI and two runs scored in the second game.
- Coltharp was 5-for-9 on the day with five runs scored, a double and a home run.
- Savage was 2-for-4 with three driven in during the nightcap.
- Catcher Austin Nairn recorded a pair of hits in the opener.
- Starter Ryan Vera struck out six batters, allowing seven hits, three runs and a walk in the no decision in game one.
- Kasey Klyng earned his first win of the season in game two, allowing four hits and no earned runs over four innings of relief.

Ozarks Notes
- Third baseman Isaac Price had three hits in both games, going 6-for-9 with three runs scored.
- Didway was 4-for-8 with a home run.
- Cash drove in five runs on the day.
- Second baseman Juan Nunez was 4-for-8 with four runs scored, two RBI and three stolen bases.
- Isaac Pelts (1-4) went the distance in game one, striking out seven while allowing 10 hits and four earned runs to gain the win.
