UTD Splits with LeTourneau, Secures Third Seed

LONGVIEW, Texas - The UT Dallas baseball wrapped up the 2023 regular season schedule with an American Southwest Conference double-header split with LeTourneau at Conrad-Vernon Field Saturday.

The host Yellow Jackets (19-21, 13-14 ASC) took the seven-inning opener 2-1 while the Comets (23-17, 15-12 ASC) earned a 7-1 victory in the nightcap.

UTD will enter the ASC Championship Tournament as the third seed. They will open the tournament on Thursday, May 4 at 11 a.m. against sixth-seeded LeTourneau on the campus of East Texas Baptist in Marshall.

The first game was a pitcher's duel with YellowJacket starter Riley Davis (5-3) getting the win, allowing six hits, one run, one walk, a hit batter and one strikeout. Dylan Hugley (3-4) took the tough-luck loss, with six hits, two runs, five walks and five strikeouts.

Catcher Austin Nairn tripled and scored on a base hit to left field by Jaeger Self in the top of the second for the Comets' only run. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded and one out, Devin Greaff singled up the middle, knocking in Lane Williams to tie the game. Left fielder Carter Amarantos plated Ethan Wood on a fielder's choice to win the game in walk-off fashion.

Despite only recording two hits, the Comets took advantage of three YellowJacket errors while drawing eight walks and reaching on four hit batters in game two.

In the top of the fourth, UTD loaded the bases on an error, a hit batter and a walk. Designated hitter Kade Turnage was hit by a pitch, scoring Robert Hines, then Brayshon Savage hit a ground ball that plated Daniel Zamora for a 2-0 advantage. LeTourneau's only run of the game came in the bottom of the fifth on a Greaff RBI-single.

After Self walked and reached second on an error, Savage knocked him in with base hit to right in the sixth. The Comets then loaded the base again and Andrew Skivington hit a grand slam over the right field fence for the 7-1 total.

Kenny Garza (1-1) earned the victory with his longest career outing, lasting seven frames and tying his best with six strikeouts while allowing just four hits and no walks.
