UTD Women's Tennis Captures Fifth ASC Title

ABILENE, Texas - The UT Dallas women's tennis won its fifth overall and fourth consecutive American Southwest Conference title, defeating Hardin-Simmons 5-1 at Streich Tennis Center Saturday afternoon.

The Comets (12-6) also won the championship in 2013, 2019, 2021 and 2022.

With the win, UTD earn the ASC's automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship Tournament, which begins Friday, May 5. The Comets will find out who and where they play with a selection show on NCAA.com Monday at 11 a.m.

The Comets started the Finals with a 2-1 lead after doubles. The top team of juniors Saumya Vedula and Rebecca Jackson defeated Lauren Schaeffer and Jonnah Smith 8-5, earning their 15th win of the season - one off the program doubles record.

Suzuka Nishino and Tisha Nakakes-Nguyen took care of Laurel Coleman and Brianne Dumas 8-1 at number three.

Needing just three singles victories to take the match from the Cowgirls (11-6), Nishino started with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Coleman in the first flight. Nakakes-Nguyen was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Taja Lawrence at number six and the final decision was won by Megan Zeng 7-5, 6-1 over Smith in the fifth spot.
