BROWNWOOD, Texas - The UT Dallas softball team took both games of Thursday's American Southwest Conference double-header against Howard Payne at Lady Jacket Field to open the series.
The Comets (17-7, 10-4 ASC) won the first game 8-4 before blanking the Lady Jackets (5-18, 1-14 ASC) 3-0 in the nightcap to extend their winning streak to seven contests.
In the opener, UTD put three runs on the board in the first. Right fielder
Claire Pollack walked with one out and catcher
Megan Todd was hit by a pitch to put a pair of runners on. Third baseman
Addison Caddell doubled down the right field line, plating Pollack, followed by a two-run single by
Sarah Lewis. The Comets took advantage of an error for another run in the second.
HPU opened the bottom of the second with back-to-back home runs from Makayla Wesley and Amber Williams to make the game 4-2. A two-run double by Caddell and run-scoring single off of Lewis' bat gave UTD a 7-2 advantage in the fourth. The Lady Jackets managed two runs in the fifth, then the Comets scored the final run of the game in the sixth when Caddell walked and later stole home as part of a double steal.
In game two, UTD pitcher
Marisa Mejia threw her second shutout of the year, striking out five while allowing just three hits.Â
The Comets once again started by scoring in the first. Second baseman
Jordan Evans led the game off with a walk, then with two outs moved to second on a Caddell hit. An error led to the bases being loaded and Mejia followed by helping her own cause with a two-run single up the middle.
MiKayla Hoffman led the top of the seventh off with a triple and scored on single by Pollack for the final run of the game.
