TEMPLE, Texas - The #14 UT Dallas men's golf team opened the 2023-24 season with a victory at the UMHB Fall Invitational at Sammons Park Tuesday.
The Comets shot a 269-274=543 for a -17, topping #16 Trinity (Texas) by four strokes. The 36-hole total crushed the old program record by 18 strokes, set by last year's team at the same event.
Mary Hardin-Baylor's B Team finished third at +3, followed by the UTD B Team (284-280=564) with a +4 in the 12-team field. The Comets second squad tied for the fourth-best two-round score in program history.
Junior
Davis Grindle, playing for the B Team, shot a 66-68=134 (-6) and finished third. Junior
Cole Wiley was a shot behind at 67-68=135 (-5), tying for fourth. Grindle and Wiley now have the top two 36-hole tallies in Comet history.
Tyler Durden (67-72=139) and
Daniel Shofner (66-73=139) tied for seventh with a -1.
Reese Tortone (69-72=141) shot a +1 and tied for 14th.
Parker McCurdy had the low round of the day for the Comets with a 67.
Charlie Lippa led all players with two eagles in the tournament. Grindle was third in the field with 10 birdies. Tortone and
Hunter Wolfinger were tied for third with 25 pars made.
UTD will be back in action on Monday, October 9 at the Alamo City Classic in San Antonio, Texas.
