RICHARDSON, Texas - The UT Dallas women's basketball team dropped its home opener 69-65 to St. Mary's (Texas) at the Activity Center Wednesday evening.
The Comets (2-3) took an 18-9 lead eight minutes into the game and led by four points at the end of the first quarter. The teams exchanged leads nine times in the second quarter with the Rattlers (3-1) taking a 33-32 advantage into halftime.
St. Mary's outscored UTD 16-11 in the third quarter by going 6-9 at the free throw line, with the home team not getting to the charity stripe in the period.
The Rattlers led by as many as eight early in the fourth quarter, but the Comets could not cut the deficit past the three-point mark.
Free throws proved to be the difference in the game with UTD being called for 24 fouls and only 12 on St. Mary's. The Rattlers were 19-of-24 at the line while the Comets were just 1-for-6.
UTD shot 42.2 percent overall (27-of-64) and 10-of-26 from three three-point line. They also recorded 32 rebounds, 22 assists, 12 turnovers, two blocks and three steals.
StMU shot 44.4 percent from the field (24-of-54) and 2-for-15 from outside with 40 boards, 15 assists, 15 turnovers, five blocks and seven steals.
UT Dallas Notes
- This was the first meeting between the Comets and the Lone Star Conference member.
- Senior
Alex Bowman was just shy of a double-double with season-highs of 18 points and nine rebounds. She also dished out four assists.
- Freshman center
Ellery Sample came off the bench to score 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting. She was 3-for-3 from three-point range and had four assists and a pair of blocks.
- Senior guard
Trystan Clark scored seven points with five assists.
- Junior
Amanda Crowninshield added six points.

Anna Yellen posted five points, five rebounds and a career-high five assists.
St. Mary's Notes
- Christin Callens led all players with 24 points to go with eight rebounds.
- Imani Ivery recorded 11 points, eight boards and four assists off the bench.
- Stina Svilberg chipped in eight points.
- Raynne Malik had six points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots.
