RICHARDSON, Texas - The UT Dallas baseball team opened the 2024 season with a pair of wins over Texas Lutheran at UTD Baseball Field Friday afternoon.
The Comets (2-0) offense looked unstoppable in game one as they defeated the bulldogs (5-4) 15-5 in seven innings. In the nightcap, UTD overcame a 5-1 deficit to win 6-5 on a walk-off home run from senior right fielder
Luke Finn in the bottom of the 11th.
Game 1
After giving up a run to TLU in the first, UTD answered with a three-run homer by
Josh Johnson in the bottom of the frame. They tacked on six more runs in the second to make the game 9-1. Junior center fielder
Jaeger Self hit a two-run blast over the left field fence, followed by a solo shot from Finn. Sophomore catcher
Nico Fernandez connected on a three-run triple off the center field wall.
Bulldog Adam Peavy hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the third, scoring catcher Garrett Helpenstill to make the game 9-2. Second baseman

Dylan Bivins hit back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the third and Johsnon had a RBI-single, leading to four more runs for the Comets.
UTD picked up another run in the fourth and again the sixth, while TLU scored three over the final two innings.
Graduate student
Ryan Vera picked up the win, going five innings while allowing five hits, three runs, four walks and striking out four. Diego Vinton (1-2) took the loss, giving up 11 hits, 13 runs, four walks and three strikeouts in three frames.
Game 2
TLU went up 3-0 in the top of the second on a two-run homer to right center by Hepenstill and a RBI-single by first baseman Tyler Post. Garza led off the bottom of the fourth with a double and scored on a Johnson double that dropped by the right field line to make the game 3-1. The Bulldogs then scored two more in the fifth.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, center fielder
Lucas Rexin tripled and Finn followed with his second home run of the day to make it 5-3. The Comets picked up another run in the sixth with shortstop
Garrett Neeley getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring first baseman
Zach Landry, who reached base on an error.Â
Finn tied the game in the seventh after drawing a lead-off walk, moving to second on a Garza hit by pitch, stealing third and a ground ball from Bivins.
With the game in extra innings, both teams left the bases loaded in the 10th. The Bulldogs went down in order in the top off the 11th, with two strikeouts from Comet reliever
Dylan Hugley.
Leading off bottom of the 11th, Finn connected on a 2-2 pitch, blasting his third homer of the day.Â
Hugley (1-0) struck out four batters with an intentional walk and three hits over three innings for the win. Nolan McInvale (0-1) gave up one run, two hits and three walks with three strikeouts over four innings in the loss.
UT Dallas Notes
- The Comets recorded 27 total bases in game one on 12 hits, including nine for extra bases - five doubles, one triple and three home runs.
- Also in game, all nine batters scored, with eight players recording extra base hits and seven driving runs in.Â
- The Comets were outhit 12-10 in game two, but drew more walks (5-4) and had more extra base hits (6-2).
- The pitching staff fanned 11 Bulldogs in game two and 17 on the day.

Caleb Vuono threw three perfect innings of relief and struck out three in game two.
- Finn finished the day going 3-for-8 with four runs scored, three homers, four RBI and a stolen base from the leadoff spot. He also made two spectacular catches in right field.Â
- Johnson and Bivins also had three hits on the day. Bivins connected on a pair of doubles and Johnson drove in five.
- Seven players made their debut for the Comets - Johnson, Garza, Landry, Rexin,
Payton Taylor,
Efren Munoz and
Dylan Collins.

- Center fielder Asher Bonnell went 4-for-8 with two runs scored and a stolen base on the day.Â
- Post, Chase Bourgeois, Xavier Arias each had two hits in game two.Â
