UTD Blasts HSU in Series Sweep

ABILENE, Texas - The UT Dallas baseball team erupted for a 10-4, seven-inning victory and a 17-11 win to finish the American Southwest Conference series sweep of Hardin-Simmons at Hunter Field Saturday.

The Comets (6-1, 3-0 ASC) outhit the Cowboys (1-8, 0-3 ASC) 16-7 in the opener while Ryan Vera struck out seven with two walks, five his and a run allowed in six innings to move to 2-0 on the season.

Senior right fielder Luke Finn set the tone with a leadoff home run to start the day. UTD added two more runs in the first, then Finn blasted another solo shot with a run-scoring double off the bat of Zach Landry to make the game 5-0 in the second. Josh Johnson and Nico Fernandez had back-to-back RBI hits in the fourth and Johnson hit a solo shot down the right field line in the sixth to go up 8-0.

HSU's first run came in the bottom of the sixth on a Karson Leatherwood RBI-single. Comet sophomore shortstop hit his first career home run to lead off the seventh and Landry doubled in Finn for a 10-1 advantage. The Cowboys scored three more in the bottom of the seventh, including a two-run double from catcher Jett Forrest.

Game two was heavy on the offensive side with UTD outhitting HSU 20-16.

Third baseman Dylan Bivins hit a three-run shot to right center in the top of the first to vie Comets another early lead. HSU picked up runs on sacrifice flies in the first and second before tying it in the third. Finn put UTD up 6-3 with a three-run homer in the fourth. The Cowboys answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the inning to tie the game again.

Junior designated hitter took a 2-0 pitch over the left field fence for a three-run blast in the top of the fifth. UTD went on to score seven runs on five hits, two walks and an error to make the contest 13-6. After a two-run sixth for the home team, the Comets scored three on five hits in the seventh to go up 16-8. Brayshon Savage singled in Bivins in the top of the eighth for UTD's final run of the day. The Cowboys managed three more runs on four hits and an error in the eight for the final 17-11 score.

UT Dallas Notes
- Finn continued his torrid pace with three home runs on the day, while going 6-for-10 with six runs scored, five RBI, a double and two steals. He now has seven homers and 19 runs scored in seven games to start the season.
- Second baseman Albert Garza was 5-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBI in game two and was 6-for-8 with five runs and a pair of steals on the day.
- Bivins drove in four while going 4-for-6 with three runs scored in game two.
- Landry went 5-for-10 with three runs scored, two doubles and three RBI.
- Johnson finished with four hits and three RBI on the day.
- Dylan Hugley moved to 2-0 on the year throwing five innings of relief in game two. He struck out five, while allowing a walk, seven hits and three earned runs.

Hardin-Simmons Notes
- Forrest was 3-for-7 with two runs, five RBI, a double and a two sac flies.
- Leatherwood had two hits in each game. 
- Brock Cavillo was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, a RBI, two doubles and a sac fly in game two.
- Grant Mitzelfelt (0-2) took the loss in game one, while Jace Martinez (0-1) was the loser in game two.
