RICHARDSON, Texas - The UT Dallas pitching staff combined to give up just four hits, a walk and an unearned run while striking out 11 batters in a 3-1 victory over Southwestern (Texas) at UTD Baseball Field Tuesday afternoon.
Right fielder Jake Harris led off the game with a base hit for the Pirates (3-5) and reached third on a throwing error. Third baseman Jacob Tanner followed with a sacrifice fly to right field for SU's only run of the game in the first.
The Comets (7-1) were held scoreless until the fourth inning when first baseman
Zach Landry and catcher
Nico Fernandez started the frame with back-to-back walks.
Brayshon Savaged bunted the pair over and
Efren Munoz grounded out, but plated Landry from third to tie the game. Sophomore shortstop
Garrett Neeley hit a single to left field, allowing Fernandez to score and give UTD a 2-1 lead.
The final run of the game came in the sixth inning when Munoz led off with a double down the left field line and went to third on a sac bunt by Neeley.
Luke Finn laid down a bunt which allowed Munoz to score.
Junior starter
Apollo Cassimatis (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, tying a career-high of five strikeouts over five innings.
Ben Price fanned four batters and allowed one hit in two innings, followed by a scoreless eighth inning from
Jake Jennings.
Caleb Vuono struck out two in a perfect ninth to earn his first save of the year.
UT Dallas Notes
- The Comets outhit the Pirates 5-4 and drew more walks 7-1.Â
- UTD tied a school record with five sacrifice bunts in the game, done three previous times with the last being in 2014.
- Munoz had the only extra-base hit of the day with a double. He also walked twice.
- Center fielder
Lucas Rexin went 1-for-2 with a sac bunt, hit by pitch and two stolen bases.
- Fernandez walked twice, as did second baseman
Will Dolan.
Southwestern Notes
- Harris went 2-for-4 with the run scored.
- First baseman Alexander Cannata had the other two hits for the Pirates, as well as the walk.
- Starter Garrett Guin struck out five and walked two while giving up a pair of hits in three scoreless innings.
- Anthony France (0-1) took the loss, allowing three walks, two runs and a hit in two-thirds of an inning.
- Braden Anderson threw a perfect eighth inning.
