TUCSON, Ariz. - The UT Dallas softball team won its first contest at the Tucson Invitational Games Wednesday, defeating Sewanee 9-1 at Lincoln Park.
The Comets (7-6) got on the board in the top of the third when senior left fielder
Alexia Mullen led off with an infield single and later scored on a single down the left field line from
Cole Johnson. The Tigers (5-17) tied the game in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Zoe Crockett, plating pinch runner Janny Gamez.
UTD took control of the game with two-run doubles from both Johnson and senior catcher
Celeste Soliz in the fifth. They went up 8-1 in the top of the sixth when Mullen led off with another infield single, stole second and scored on a
Claire Pollack triple, followed by an
Addison Caddell single up the middle, scoring Pollack.
Julia Guerrero pinch ran for Caddell and stole home with the bases loaded.
The Comets added a final run in the seventh after
Holly Selldin led off with a pinch hit walk and was run for by
Kailey Gonzales, who scored on a double by
Megan Cavazos.
UTD outhit Sewanee 13-7 in the game. Junior
McKenzie Cutbirth allowed seven hits, one run, two walks and struck out three over six innings to move to 5-0 on the year.
UT Dallas Notes
- The Comets tied a school record by having four batters hit by a pitch.

Marisa Mejia threw a scoreless seventh inning.
- Pollack went 4-for-5 with two runs scored, a RBI, a double, a triple and a stolen base. She is hitting .579 over her last five games.
- Mullen went 3-for-4 and scored twice with two stolen bases. She is 14-for-14 in steals on the year and has five multiple-steal performances.
- Johnson drove in a career-high three runs, going 2-for-5 with a double.
- Soliz knocked in two with a double and threw out a base runner trying to steal.
Sewanee Notes
- Abbie Buckner (0-4) lasted 4.1 innings and allowed eight hits, five runs, a walk and struck out two.
- Shortstop Eve Bournais was 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base.
- Grace Black had a base hit and was hit by a pitch.
- Five other Tigers recorded base hits.
