RICHARDSON, Texas - The UT Dallas softball team defeated McMurry 5-2 Saturday afternoon and captured its first American Southwest Conference series of the season.
The Comets (4-5, 2-1 ASC) outhit the War Hawks (6-3, 1-2 ASC) 9-6 with all five runs coming via the long ball at UTD Softball Field.
Sophomore right fielder
Claire Pollack blasted a grand slam over the left field fence in the bottom of the second to give UTD a 4-0 lead. Center fielder Mercedes Camacho hit a solo shot for McMurry in the fourth to make the game 4-1.
Comet freshman shortstop
Blair Collier also homered to left field in the fourth. The final run of the game came in the fifth when pinch hitter Reaghan Staehely drove in pinch runner Morgan Mehaffey with a sacrifice fly.
Junior hurler
McKenzie Cutbirth (2-0) picked up her second win of the series, striking out six while allowing six hits, one earned run and a walk in a complete game effort. Maya Mongelli (1-1) took the loss for McMurry.
UT Dallas Notes
- Cutbirth has struck out 19 batters over her last 15 innings of work.
- Pollack's home run was the sixth of her career and the 24th grand slam in program history. She was 2-for-4 on the day.
- Collier was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a hit by pitch to go with her first career homer.
- Left fielder
Alexia Mullen was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a hit by pitch.
- Second baseman
MiKayla Hoffman was also 2-for-3
McMurry Notes
- Camacho went 2-for-3 with the solo shot.
- Angelica Abila, Morgan Faubion, Aliyah Tanguma and Elaina Herrera each recorded singles.
- Jenna Lewis allowed five hits, one run and two walks while striking out one batter in four innings of relief.
